My research takes a multi-method and translational approach toward identifying underlying risks for co-occurring substance use and anxiety, with an emphasis on cigarette smoking and nicotine dependence. My research focuses on two main hypotheses: (1) Psychological factors (i.e., cognitive and emotional processes) and (2) Physiological parameters increase vulnerability for and serve to maintain anxiety and substance use disorders via their role in self-regulation. Within a translational frame, my work includes both experimental paradigms and intervention development.
