The goal of this secondary data analysis project is to use a genetically informative framework to understand cross-disorder spousal influences on alcohol use disorder (AUD) onset, remission, and relapse. The expected outcome is a deeper understanding of the nature of the associations between spousal substance use and psychiatric disorders and the onset and persistence of AUD during marriage. These findings may, in turn, have implications for expanding social stress models of AUD to explicitly consider spousal substance use and psychiatric disorders as a form of interpersonal stress, and inform couples and family systems-based preventive interventions for AUD.
