SUMMARY:CDUHR Methods Core Presentation featuring Jerel Ezell - "AI in Substance Use Research: Understanding the Perils and Prospects"
DESCRIPTION:Could AI help us address entrenched challenges in supporting the health of people with substance use disorders? How would AI mesh with the ethos of the typically non-tech-savvy substance use research field? And where would we begin? AI’s possibilities are limitless. However\, to date\, AI’s possibilities in modern public health\, specifically substance use\, have not been deeply explored. In this talk\, we’ll discuss the basics of AI literacy and competency and unpack the current state of AI development in the substance use field. We’ll also discuss evolving AI ethics and potential challenges and opportunities in developing AI-driven interventions. \nJerel Ezell is an assistant professor and social epidemiologist at the University of Chicago. He did his PhD in sociology at the University of Chicago and his MPH at Columbia University. He is a former Fulbright Scholar and currently directs the Center for AI and Everybody and the Berkeley Center for Cultural Humility. Dr. Ezell’s research and teaching focus on racial and geographic disparities in opioid use. SUMMARY:4th Annual Community Youth Mental Health Summit: Developing Solutions Through Partnership!
DESCRIPTION:For those who have not attended the summit in the past\, this event is different from typical conferences. The majority of the day is spent engaging in activities with other attendees to share information\, resources\, and form new partnerships. Last year we had over 160 unique organizations attend\, ranging from parents and youth\, to schools\, to community- based mental health agencies\, to hospital leaders\, to state agencies and foundations. The goal of the summit is to increase community connections\, so that families and youth can receive comprehensive and holistic mental health and wellness services. The Summit doesn’t just bring people together; it provides funding opportunities to encourage attendees to form partnerships across organizations. Summit attendees will again be eligible for partnership grants designed to foster new collaborations within communities. This past year\, we were able to fund seven\, $5\,000 projects proposed by summit attendees. Registration for the summit and resource tables is on a first come first serve basis. Dr. Jamey Lister\, the Workgroup Lead and Associate Professor in the School of Social Work\, will give a talk overviewing examples of impact science from his addiction research projects. These will include: (1) dissemination and partnership strategies used with community and governmental organizations addressing opioid use disorder for rural New Jerseyeans\, (2) data-driven implementation planning products that leveraged patient data about substance use obtained from a large academic health care facility partner in Union County (NJ)\, and a (3) study targeting implications for drug policymakers that convened a panel of national addiction experts to rank drugs by their harms using Multi-Criterion Decision Analysis (MCDA) methodology. DESCRIPTION:As the Baby Boomer population in the United States ages\, those in this generation are likely to develop complex health needs\, and many will spend at least some time in a nursing facility. Along with health conditions related to aging\, many in this group struggle with substance use disorders\, and quality care can be difficult to find. On April 17\, Addiction Medicine physicians with the Southern New Jersey Medications for Addiction Treatment Center of Excellence will host a two-hour lecture on April 17 explaining how to best address addiction in older adults living in nursing homes. This free event offers Continuing Medical Education credits to those who attend.

SUMMARY:11th Annual Scholar Poster Session featuring Dr. David Lydon-Staley - "Rethinking Curiosity in Substance Use: Data-Driven Insights from Dynamic Systems and Intensive Longitudinal Research"
DESCRIPTION: Curiosity plays a complex role in substance use as it can contribute to initiation\, but it also offers a powerful avenue for intervention. This presentation explores research examining curiosity as a motivational process that can be deliberately engaged through health communication to promote behavior change\, with applications to tobacco and alcohol use.  \nEvidence shows that curiosity-eliciting messages reliably enhance attention to and recall of substance-related health information among adolescents and U.S. priority populations. Research on persistence dynamics demonstrates how tightly coupled symptom systems during tobacco withdrawal can sustain discomfort and undermine cessation efforts. Bridging these perspectives\, curiosity emerges as a modifiable lever for disrupting maladaptive persistence. DESCRIPTION:For many people seeking help with alcohol problems\, learning to drink more moderately and safely can be a realistic\, sustainable goal. For others\, managed drinking serves as a valuable first step toward abstinence—temporary or long-term. Whatever a client’s goals\, clinicians must be prepared to help them assess drinking patterns and support positive\, incremental change. \nAlthough abstinence-only models have long dominated treatment\, research and clinical practice increasingly support harm reduction strategies\, including moderate drinking\, as effective options for individuals with less severe or earlier-stage alcohol issues and as extremely helpful engagement strategies for those with more severe problems. This approach promotes flexibility\, inclusivity\, and greater engagement among clients who might otherwise avoid treatment. \nBecause office-based psychologists and other mental health therapists are often the first professionals consulted about alcohol concerns\, all mental health practitioners—regardless of specialty—need the knowledge and skills to address these issues competently. SUMMARY:GSAPP Webinar - Courage\, Psychology\, and Medicine for Opioid Use Disorder Treatment
DESCRIPTION:This session has three segments: 1) brief overview of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)\, highlight on the role of Medicine for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) in recovery\, and update the general practitioner on 2026 shifts in the opioid and overdose crises; 2) describe the role of best practices of a) Motivational Interviewing and b) harm reduction psychotherapy in the treatment of OUD and a case example of same; and 3) illustrate information relevant to treatment for loved ones of people with OUD including psychoeducation on a) the courage of recovering people\, b) the harm of MOUD stigma\, and c) the US Surgeon General recommended overdose reversal training.  Audience participation is encouraged throughout the presentation and an exercise involving the case example will require audience participation. SUMMARY:GSAPP Webinar - Harm Reduction Psychotherapy for Substance Use and Other Addictive Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:This training will provide a clinical roadmap of harm reduction psychotherapy as a compassionate\, non-judgmental framework for engaging and treating clients navigating active substance use and addictive behaviors. Moving beyond traditional abstinence-only models\, this approach empowers clinicians to support a range of client-directed goals\, including abstinence\, moderation\, and safer use. Discussions will also focus on how to address the co-occurring complexities accompanying substance use such as a history of trauma\, relationship issues\, and mood and anxiety disorders. Therapeutic strategies to build compassion and collaboratively establish sustainable positive changes will be reviewed. Participants will gain practical skills to foster a collaborative therapeutic alliance\, help clients cultivate mindfulness practices\, and develop self-regulation skills. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify three core principles of harm reduction psychotherapy.\nSummarize the efficacy of harm reduction strategies. \nDescribe how “urge surfing” can help with managing cravings and emotional triggers.\n\nInstructor Bio \nJenifer Levy\, PhD is a licensed psychologist with a private practice serving clients in New York\, New Jersey\, and Connecticut.  Dr. Levy specializes in the treatment of addictive issues and trauma from a harm reduction framework that is collaborative\, compassionate\, and non-judgmental. Dr. Levy obtained her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech and completed her internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Princeton House Behavioral Health. She previously worked as the Assistant Director of The Center for Optimal Living\, an outpatient private practice in NYC\, where she coordinated clinical services and training activities along with providing psychotherapy. She also taught and supervised graduate students in psychology as the Assistant Director of the Concentration in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling at The New School for Social Research. Prior to that\, she was a Supervising Psychologist at the Women’s Health Project at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. In addition to offering psychotherapy services\, Dr. Levy facilitates trainings on a range of topics related to addictive issues\, harm reduction\, mindfulness approaches\, and working with trauma survivors.
