She has been conducting clinical research on substance use disorder for nearly 30 years with a special emphasis on opioid use disorder and its treatment. Her research program has been continuously funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Walsh has served as an advisor and reviewer for numerous agencies\, including the National Institutes of Health\, the Food and Drug Administration\, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\, the Veterans Administration and the World Health Organization. She is the principal investigator of the $87 million grant UK received as part of the NIH’s HEALing Communities study. Walsh earned her M.S. and Ph.D. from Rutgers University.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP) for Mental Health Practitioners
DESCRIPTION:This course seeks to provide mental health practitioners with an overview of Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP) as it stands today\, including the use of ketamine\, MDMA and psilocybin. The field of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy is changing and evolving\, with new laws being introduced across the country at a rapid pace. This course will include topics such as a brief history of psychedelics and the field of psychology in the US\, ethical considerations\, and an overview of current legal limitations and laws. Our presenters will discuss the anatomy of a PAP session\, harm reduction in the field of psychedelic work\, cultural concerns and considerations\, as well as increasing accessibility for underserved populations. Special consideration will be paid to the importance of preparation and integration work for all clients\, which providers qualify to provide PAP and the role of “sitters” or non licensed practitioners\, clients who make good PAP referrals\, and mental health challenges and issues which may be helped or improved by PAP. Finally this workshop will explore PAP clinics and retreats\, both domestic and abroad. SUMMARY:RWJMS Integrated Behavioral Health Policy Summit
DESCRIPTION:Rutgers medical students are hosting the first Integrated Behavioral Health Policy Summit inviting medical students across the state of New Jersey\, behavioral health providers\, and leaders across UBHC\, Medicaid\, MHANJ\, etc. The aim of the policy summit includes highlighting the current challenges in the delivery of integrated behavioral health in New Jersey\, through hosting an interdisciplinary panel discussion\, research symposium\, and resolution writing workshop. \nAs prospective physicians\, greater than one fourth of our patients may suffer from a mental health illness\, regardless of specialty\, which highlights a critical need to examine the complexities of the behavioral health crisis\, understand the mental health policy landscape\, and advance advocacy efforts which address both clinical and non-clinical disparities affecting the behavioral health of our country. Supporting the federal government’s initiative for integrating behavioral health\, this proposal highlights a formal statewide behavioral health policy summit hosting medical students from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School\, New Jersey Medical School\, Hackensack Meridian\, and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University to equip medical students with awareness of Integrative Behavioral Healthcare\, and learn from faculty members on novel pedagogical approaches to incorporate robust mental health policy education into their clinical training to support their patients\, peers\, and themselves.

SUMMARY:Medical and Legal Marijuana in NJ: Practice and Policy Issues
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this interactive webinar is to identify the changes that have occurred in the NJ Medical Marijuana Program. The history of marijuana legalization and major events that have shaped this history are discussed. Known scientific research on the benefits of medical marijuana and the risks associated with marijuana usage are covered\, as well as the continued barriers to better scientific research on this topic. SUMMARY:NJ ACTS Special Populations Seminar with Pia Mauro\, PhD - "Alcohol and Tobacco Use among Older Adults in the US: A Lifecourse Perspective"
DESCRIPTION:Older adults bear the brunt of negative alcohol- and tobacco-related health consequences and mortality\, yet they are often left behind in substance use research. This presentation will describe the epidemiology of alcohol and tobacco use in older adulthood\, estimate longitudinal changes in use in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic\, and discuss opportunities to engage people in services when clinically indicated. \nPia M. Mauro\, PhD\, is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. As a substance use epidemiologist\, Dr. Mauro’s work focuses on individual and structural drivers of substance use treatment need\, uptake\, availability\, and outcomes. SUMMARY:Ninth Annual Rutgers Brain Health Institute Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The symposium will feature talks by new BHI faculty whose research spans basic\, translational\, and clinical neuroscience. The keynote speaker is Dr. Michael Shadlen from Columbia University. Mike is an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Research Institute and Professor of Neuroscience at Columbia University Medical School. He is a member of the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute (ZI) and the Kavli Institute of Brain Science. Dr. Shadlen obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees at Brown University\, PhD at UC Berkeley with Ralph Freeman\, and post-doc training in clinical neurology at Stanford University with William Newsome. His research focuses primarily on the neural mechanisms that underlie decision making. He is also a jazz guitarist and co-curates the Jazz Artist in Residence program at ZI. Honors include the Alden Spencer Prize\, Golden Brain\, Lashley Award\, and elections to the AAAS\, National Academy of Medicine\, and the National Academy of Sciences. \nKeeping with the clinical neuroscience theme\, the afternoon session at the symposium will feature Dr. Michal Beeri\, the newly recruited Director of the Krieger Klein Alzheimer and Dementia Clinical Research & Treatment Center in BHI\, as well as presentations by Rey Panettieri\, MD and Nancy Reilly\, RN on resources available for clinical neuroscience research via the NJACTS – CTSA and RBHS Clinical Trials Office. \nThe student/post-doc poster session and award ceremony will wrap up the symposium. This year\, the top three posters at the symposium will be awarded $200\, $150\, and $100\, respectively. DESCRIPTION:Individuals with Developmental Disabilities are likely to experience some form of trauma during their lifetime. There is often a failure to recognize the effects of trauma on people with DD and the signs of past experiences may be overlooked or untreated. This session will explore the types of traumatic events that are common and why people with Disabilities are more at risk. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Center of Alcohol and Substance Use Studies to hear Dr. Pedersen present:\nComorbid Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use in Veterans: Implementing Internet-Based Interventions Dr. Pedersen will be presenting his seminar as the 2023 Cooper Colloquium featured speaker \nDr. Pedersen is an associate professor of psychiatry and the behavioral sciences at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and an adjunct behavioral scientist at the RAND Corporation. \nHis work focuses on substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders in veteran and young adult populations. He is interested in finding ways to target comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders. His work has examined constructs of guilt\, mindfulness\, pain\, sleep\, and adverse experiences as they relate to PTSD\, alcohol\, and cannabis use.
