SUMMARY:CMBN Colloquium Series: New Approaches to the Neuroscience of Human Drug Addiction: Drug Bias\, Natural Language Processing and the Synchronized Brain
DESCRIPTION:Online | Zoom: https://rutgers.zoom.us/j/98443527746?pwd=SDcyRE1PRlZ1VStWTi92Q1J5YWNadz09\nDrug addiction is a chronically relapsing disorder characterized by excessive drug use despite catastrophic personal consequences (e.g.\, loss of family\, job\, health) and even when the substance is no longer perceived as pleasurable. In a theoretical model called iRISA (Impaired Response Inhibition and Salience Attribution) we postulated that core impairments in addiction are the disproportionate value/salience attributed to the drug and drug cues at the expense of other reinforcers\, with a concomitant decrease in inhibitory control and self-regulation. This model assigns a primary role to the prefrontal cortex\, part of the dopaminergic mesocorticolimbic circuit\, in these higher-order executive deficits. In this talk\, I will present results of human neuroimaging studies where we utilized a multimodal approach (neuropsychology\, functional magnetic resonance imaging\, diffusion weighted imaging\, event-related potentials recordings) across drugs of abuse (cocaine\, heroin) to explore the neurobiology underlying these core behavioral\, cognitive\, emotional and motivational impairments in drug addiction (encompassing drug cue reactivity\, impulsivity) as associated with its clinical symptomatology (encompassing craving and drug seeking). Novel results shed light on brain recovery with abstinence and active treatment\, inclusive of cognitive enhancement with pharmacological (methylphenidate) and behavioral (cognitive reappraisal) tools\, as well as with mindfulness and direct brain stimulation (with transcranial devices). Natural language processing and naturalistic stimuli (i.e.\, movies: real-life\, dynamic\, complex and context-rich) are now also being explored in the lab for their use in unraveling ecologically valid brain-behavior biomarkers (and predictors) of both impairment and recovery in drug addiction. Together\, this talk will exemplify the use of neuroimaging to better understand human drug addiction and for the development of empirically-based effective neurorehabilitation strategies in this devastating disorder.

Research shows that most people who drink “too much” are not alcoholics and that many of these “problem drinkers” can learn to moderate their drinking within safer limits rather than quit drinking completely. An alternative to traditional abstinence-only approaches\, harm reduction supports individualized treatment goals including less risky/harmful drinking\, moderate drinking\, and abstinence. He is a board certified physician in emergency medicine\, medical toxicology and addiction medicine. Dr. Nelson attended SUNY Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn and performed his residency training at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. He previously served as the director of the fellowship in medical toxicology at New York University’s School of Medicine and as vice-chair for academic affairs in the department of emergency medicine.

SUMMARY:BHI/CAHBIR Webinar: The Neural Mechanics of Changing Your Mind
DESCRIPTION:December 7\, 2022 at 10:00-11:15am (EST) \nHumans and other mammals exhibit a high degree of control when selecting actions in a dynamic and constantly changing world. This flexibility in decision-making is mediated by a set of cortical-subcortical circuits in the brain that control both how sensory information drives action selection and how feedback signals modify future decisions. In this talk I will highlight the neural mechanics of this flexible decision-making and show how this gives us insights into the algorithms by which mammals change their minds. \nInstructor: Timothy Verstynen Ph.D.\nAssociate Professor\, Co-Director CMU-Pitt BRIDGE Center\nDept. Psychology\, CMNI\, Biomedical Engineering\, Carnegie Mellon University \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Verstynen received his Ph.D. in Psychology from UC Berkeley and went on to do postdoctoral training in computational neuroscience at UCSF and cognitive neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh. He is currently an Associate Professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the Department of Psychology and the Carnegie Mellon Neuroscience Institute\, with a cross appointment in Biomedical engineering. Dr. Verstynen directs the Cognitive Axon Lab\, where he studies decision-making and learning. He is also the Co-Director of the CMU-Pitt BRIDGE Center\, a research dedicated MRI center with a strong emphasis on computational neuroimaging. It will feature talks by Rutgers faculty presenting their cutting-edge research. The afternoon session includes student/post-doc poster presentations with cash awards to the top three best posters. \nThe keynote speaker for this year is Constance Cepko\, Ph.D. Dr. Cepko is Bullard Professor of Genetics and Neuroscience at Harvard Medical School and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. She trained in virology with Phil Sharp at MIT for a Ph.D. and later with Richard Mulligan at the MIT Whitehead Institute. She helped develop retroviral vectors for transduction into the nervous system for lineage analysis and for studies of gene function in vivo. Her laboratory has focused on the topic of cell fate determination in the retina through the analysis of the behavior of progenitor and stem cells.
