SUMMARY:SSW Webinar: The Opioid Crisis in NJ: Current Trends and Evidence-Based Treatment Options
DESCRIPTION:This interactive webinar will discuss the latest developments and trends regarding natural opiates\, semi-synthetic opioids\, and synthetic opioids. Participants will be able to identify national and local NJ trends with regards to prescribing practices and new legislation\, opioid overdoses and trends with opioid use. Participants will be able to distinguish the difference between which drugs are considered naturally occurring opiates\, which are considered semi-synthetic opioids and which are considered synthetic opioids. Participants will be introduced into the assessment of and treatment of Opioid Use Disorders via the DSM 5 criteria\, the latest nationally recognized medicated assisted treatment and the non-medication assisted treatment approaches when working with clients. Participants will be able to identify three different medicated assisted treatments (MAT)\, and discussion of medicinal marijuana being added as an MAT option. Webinar participants will be introduced to a harm reduction treatment paradigm and will be able to identify at least 3 different harm reduction principles when working with clients. Finally\, participants will engage in an interactive case that will develop throughout the webinar and have different objectives (e.g.\, assessing a proper level of care\, and then incorporating a harm reduction treatment orientation with the client in regards to their MAT decision process). SUMMARY:BHI/CAHBIR/RWJMS Faculty Candidate Seminar: Dr. Sheila Shanmugan
DESCRIPTION:Sheila Shanmugan\, MD\, PhD \nUNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA – SCHOOL OF MEDICINE \n“Towards Personalized Reproductive Psychiatry” \nReproductive psychiatry is currently a field of trial and error. We don’t know which patient’s disorders will improve\, worsen\, or persist; we also don’t know which treatment will work best for a patient until she tries it. Optimizing early intervention is particularly critical in reproductive psychiatry\, not only because puberty\, pregnancy\, and menopause are times of heightened vulnerability to psychopathology\, but also because the consequences of delaying intervention during these reproductive time points are often long-lasting. In this talk\, I will describe how I envision combining neuroimaging and machine learning to answer these clinical questions in women’s mental health. First\, I will present my recent work on sex differences in personalized functional networks. Next\, I will present my graduate work on indicators of and treatments for perimenopausal executive dysfunction. Finally\, I will describe the path I envision towards developing sex-specific machine learning models that aim to personalize early interventions in reproductive psychiatry. \nJoin Zoom Meeting: https://rutgers.zoom.us/j/97288891767?pwd=cmhlSjhkOFhObHhjQTNaVExsR0VSZz09 \nMeeting ID: 972 8889 1767 \nPassword: 123456 \nOne tap mobile: +16465588656

SUMMARY:SAMHSA's GAINS Center Webinar: When Recovery is Work: Promoting Wellness in Peer Support Roles
DESCRIPTION:Peers provide a critical level of support for individuals throughout all intercepts of the criminal justice system\, but often\, the supportive nature of their role causes them to prioritize the needs of others over themselves. When a peer neglects their own needs to support the needs of others\, they become more likely to experience negative consequences such as burnout and compassion fatigue. This is especially true for peers working with individuals who are involved with the criminal justice system. Whether a peer is serving as a mentor\, assisting individuals with navigating the criminal justice system\, advocating for those in recovery\, or providing linkages to supports and services\, it is crucial that peers not lose sight of their own wellness and job satisfaction. This webinar will feature an introduction to the 8 Dimensions of Wellness as a framework for identifying personal goals and opportunities to increase self-care practices. Speakers will discuss the importance of self-care amongst peer support staff\, as well as specific strategies peers can use to achieve and maintain personal wellness. Speakers will also describe the steps that an organization can take to provide support to their peer staff and to encourage self-care practices and overall wellness in the workplace. \nPresenters\n\nPhilip Cooper\, CPSS\, CHW\, Executive Director\, Operation Gateway\, Asheville\, North Carolina\nPeggy Swarbrick\, PhD\, FAOTA\, Director\, Collaborative Support Programs of New Jersey Wellness Institute; Research Professor and Associate Director\, Center of Alcohol and Substance Use Studies\, Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology\, Piscataway\, New Jersey\n\n\nRegister: click here

SUMMARY:NJ ACTS Special Populations Core Seminar Series: The Role of Confidence in the Hard Problem of Addiction
DESCRIPTION:Many people who have a substance use disorder sincerely want to give up their addiction or not relapse\, but they often struggle to do so. Dr. S. Matthew Liao calls this the Hard Problem of addiction because the explanation for this problem seems difficult to find. He first argues that the disease model and certain versions of the choice model of addiction are inadequate for explaining the Hard Problem. Dr. Liao then proposes that paying closer attention to the confidence levels of those with addiction gives us a fuller explanation of the Hard Problem. \nDr. Liao is Arthur Zitrin Chair of Bioethics\, Director of the Center for Bioethics\, Professor of Global Public Health\, and Affiliated Professor in the Department of Philosophy at New York University. He is the author or editor of The Right to Be Loved (Oxford University Press); Moral Brains: The Neuroscience of Morality (Oxford University Press); The Philosophical Foundations of Human Rights (Oxford University Press); Current Controversies in Bioethics (Routledge)\, Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (Oxford University Press)\, and over 70 articles in philosophy and bioethics. \nJoin the Zoom meeting: go.rutgers.edu/bpp89wut

SUMMARY:GSAPP Webinar: Opioid Addiction and Its Treatment: What Every Psychotherapist Needs to Know
DESCRIPTION:An unremitting epidemic of opioid use and overdose deaths highlights the need for all mental health therapists\, regardless of professional discipline or specialty area\, to know how to evaluate\, diagnose\, engage\, treat\, and/or refer opioid-using clients they are likely to encounter in office-based practice and other clinical settings. Although medication is often the first-line treatment for opioid dependence\, the combination of targeted pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy is often more effective than either one alone. This presentation will describe the scope and consequences of opioid use; the clinical pharmacology of opioid drugs\, clinical assessment and diagnosis\, individualized treatment planning\, medications for treating opioid use disorders (including buprenorphine and naltrexone)\, and a client-centered psychotherapeutic approach that integrates evidence-based behavioral and pharmacological interventions within a harm reduction framework. Lecture material will be interspersed with case vignettes to illustrate the clinical application of this approach. \n  \nFor more information: click here
