SUMMARY:The Opioid Epidemic: A Focus on Vulnerable Populations Part III
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis webinar will revisit the topic of populations vulnerable to opioid use disorder\, which had been covered in both the 2021 and 2022 Learning Series. Many groups\, due to factors such as socioeconomic status\, are more likely to suffer from the opioid epidemic. Experts will examine why that is the case and what is being done to address the issue. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:CAI Conference: Best Practices in Trauma Informed Overdose Prevention: Confronting Stigma to Save Lives
DESCRIPTION:While substance use disorders are considered chronic and treatable medical conditions\, studies still show that people who use drugs still face discrimination and stigma that negatively impacts wellness and access to healthcare\, including initiation of medications for opioid use disorder and social services. Thus\, confronting and reducing stigma is critical to addressing the overdose epidemic. \nAs more initiatives unfold across New Jersey to increase access to overdose prevention\, harm reduction\, treatment\, and recovery services\, confronting stigma at multiple levels and creating a culture of change is imperative\, despite the pervasiveness among the public and healthcare providers. Join us to gain insights\, understanding\, connections and strategies to recognize and address stigma across the care continuum to create healing environments that support people who use drugs and the people who care for them. \nWho should attend:\nCAI strives to build the trauma lens in agencies that work in public health and public safety across the state to foster a trauma-informed ecosystem that allows for compassionate and non-judgmental service delivery approaches. Persons in the field harm reduction\, substance use disorder\, addiction medicine\, HIV prevention and treatment\, including but not limited to front line staff and providers\, community health workers\, overdose fatality review team members\, EMS personnel. \nPlease Note: \n\nThis is a free conference.\nCEU’s are not available for this conference.\nBreakfast and hot lunch to be served. If you have any dietary restrictions\, please contact Patrick Taylor at ptaylor@CAIglobal.org\n\nFor more information\, click here.

SUMMARY:Medical and Legal Marijuana in NJ: Practice and Policy Issues
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this interactive webinar is to identify the changes that have occurred in the NJ Medical Marijuana Program. The history of marijuana legalization and major events that have shaped this history are discussed. Known scientific research on the benefits of medical marijuana and the risks associated with marijuana usage are covered\, as well as the continued barriers to better scientific research on this topic. Interactive exercises are incorporated in order to have participants analyze child custody issues for clients who are on the NJ medical marijuana program. Other exercises include the participants discussing how treatment is impacted by medical marijuana and participants will analyze under what conditions there would be a “duty to report” a coworker on medical marijuana. \n\n\n\nInstructor: \nGlenn Duncan\, LPC\, LCADC\, CCS\, ACS\n\n\nDate: \nTuesday\, November 28\, 2023\n\n\nTime: \n9:30 am – 12:30 pm ET\n\n\nLocation: \nLive Interactive Online Webinar\n\n\n\nFor more information\, click here.

SUMMARY:RWJMS Integrated Behavioral Health Policy Summit
DESCRIPTION:Rutgers medical students are hosting the first Integrated Behavioral Health Policy Summit inviting medical students across the state of New Jersey\, behavioral health providers\, and leaders across UBHC\, Medicaid\, MHANJ\, etc. The aim of the policy summit includes highlighting the current challenges in the delivery of integrated behavioral health in New Jersey\, through hosting an interdisciplinary panel discussion\, research symposium\, and resolution writing workshop. \nAs prospective physicians\, greater than one fourth of our patients may suffer from a mental health illness\, regardless of specialty\, which highlights a critical need to examine the complexities of the behavioral health crisis\, understand the mental health policy landscape\, and advance advocacy efforts which address both clinical and non-clinical disparities affecting the behavioral health of our country. Supporting the federal government’s initiative for integrating behavioral health\, this proposal highlights a formal statewide behavioral health policy summit hosting medical students from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School\, New Jersey Medical School\, Hackensack Meridian\, and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University to equip medical students with awareness of Integrative Behavioral Healthcare\, and learn from faculty members on novel pedagogical approaches to incorporate robust mental health policy education into their clinical training to support their patients\, peers\, and themselves.

DESCRIPTION:This course seeks to provide mental health practitioners with an overview of Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP) as it stands today\, including the use of ketamine\, MDMA and psilocybin. The field of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy is changing and evolving\, with new laws being introduced across the country at a rapid pace. This course will include topics such as a brief history of psychedelics and the field of psychology in the US\, ethical considerations\, and an overview of current legal limitations and laws. Our presenters will discuss the anatomy of a PAP session\, harm reduction in the field of psychedelic work\, cultural concerns and considerations\, as well as increasing accessibility for underserved populations. Special consideration will be paid to the importance of preparation and integration work for all clients\, which providers qualify to provide PAP and the role of “sitters” or non licensed practitioners\, clients who make good PAP referrals\, and mental health challenges and issues which may be helped or improved by PAP. Finally this workshop will explore PAP clinics and retreats\, both domestic and abroad. We will provide resources for further learning and how to get started building your PAP practice. \nInstructors (Panel Presentation): Stephanie Field\, LCSW\, LCADC; Rena Beyer\, MSW\, LCSW; Liz Flores Farrell\, LCSW; Leland Newman\, LCSW & Denise Rue\, LCSW\nInstructional Level: Introductory\nLOCATION: Nelson Biology Building\, 604 Allison Road\, Room D340\, Piscataway\, NJ 08854 (Rutgers University Busch Campus)

SUMMARY:Leveraging the Capacities of Peers in Rural Health Services Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Peers\, people with lived experience of addiction recovery\, are well positioned to address unmet service needs in rural areas. Because of their lived experience and informal approach\, peers can quickly build rapport with people in or seeking recovery and connect them with local resources. However\, peer services can be challenged by stigma toward drug use\, inconsistencies with credentialing and supervision\, and the emotional burden of the work. These challenges may be exacerbated in rural communities characterized by fewer resources and conservative beliefs about addiction recovery. \nThis webinar will present an overview of the value of peer services in rural communities. Attendees will review various peer support models and identify strategies for successfully incorporating peers in existing health and social service settings. \nPresenter: Emily Pasman\, PhD\, LMSW is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Michigan Center for the Study of Drugs\, Alcohol\, Smoking and Health. Her social work practice has centered around the development\, implementation\, and evaluation of peer-delivered recovery support services. Her current research aims to expand harm reduction interventions and improve peer-delivered services\, primarily by reducing stigma toward non-abstinent recovery.
