SUMMARY:Cyberbotany and the Quest for Epistemic Justice in Psychedelic Research Webinar featuring Dr. Joanna Kempner
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Borghesi-Mellon Psychedelic Pasts\, Presents & Futures Workshop Group for a presentation with Dr. Joanna Kempner.\n\n\n\nThe reemergence of psychedelic research in universities comes with a robust historical narrative that blames politicians for the rise and fall of scientific interest in these substances. While it’s true that public policies made it more difficult to study psychedelics in institutionalized settings\, prohibition only pushed experimentation with psychedelics underground and out of sight. Nevertheless\, knowledge produced underground has been foundational in contemporary psychedelic science\, vis a vis a practice that I call “cyberbotany.”\n\nCyberbotany\, or the digital ethnobotanical study\, leverages the wealth of experiential data available within online communities to understand the use of psychedelic substances. This approach circumvents the legal and logistical barriers to traditional research by tapping into the vast\, yet often overlooked\, reservoir of knowledge generated in digital spaces.\n\n\n\nIt’s not always clear\, however\, that the use of cyberbotany translates into recognition of the value that diverse knowledge systems have brought into the field. I argue that cyberbotany underscores the importance of epistemic justice in the domain of psychedelic studies. DESCRIPTION:Despite thousands of published articles on FASD\, limited research focuses specifically on adolescents and adults with FASD. As individuals diagnosed with FASD age\, the “need to know” across a broad spectrum of areas continues to be critically important for identifying clinically relevant research questions and directions that will impact their day-to-day function and health outcomes. \nBuilding on the work of eight previous conferences*\, we aim to examine relevant global research\, programs and policies. What can we learn from practice-based evidence? What does existing or emerging research tell us? Are the results transferable from country to country and/or from laboratory and clinical studies to real life? Are there clinical implications of results from any of these areas of which we should be aware? What are the changes in our thinking\, practice and directions that will be required to improve outcomes? What are the implications for the future? \nWe hope you can join us at this interactive conference and be at the forefront of addressing these relevant global issues. \n*This conference\, previously held in Vancouver\, Canada and hosted by University of British Columbia’s Interprofessional Continuing Education\, has been moved to Seattle\, the birthplace of the FASD diagnosis in North America. SUMMARY:NeC-ROTAC Virtual Training - Harm Reduction Principles\, Strategies and Benefits
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Northeast and Caribbean Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Center (NeC-ROTAC) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith increasing overdose rates\, a more lethal drug supply\, and more prescription medications in many homes\, it’s important to educate a wider audience about harm reduction and what it means: essentially\, reducing the negative consequences of potentially risky behaviors. This workshop will present different definitions of harm reduction\, highlight how we all practice harm reduction in our lives\, and explain how harm reduction strategies are implemented in different settings\, with a focus on rural communities. DESCRIPTION:An increasing number of countries and US states have legalized or are considering the legalization of cannabis for non-medical use. A major concern is that legalization could increase cannabis use and associated harms. This presentation will review studies tracking changes in healthcare visits due to cannabis in children and adults following non-medical cannabis legalization in Canada. \nDr. Daniel Myran is a clinician-scientist and assistant professor with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa. He is an associate scientist at ICES\, where his research program focuses on using natural experiments combined with linked health administrative data to better understand the impacts of public policy on mental health and substance use healthcare visits and outcomes. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Northeast and Caribbean Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Center (NeC-ROTAC) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs we think about the impact of substance use and mental health within rural communities\, a key component is accessing the resources available. In this webinar\, we will discuss potential interventions that can be implemented or strengthened within rural communities. This workshop will focus on how providers and community members can develop collaborative networks to support members of their community who may be facing substance use and mental health challenges in their daily lives. We will also discuss potential prevention methods to be introduced within community spaces to reduce the impact of substance use on individuals and families\, and increase engagement in mental health care. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenter: Dr. Delores Blackwell\, LCSW\, is a multijurisdictional licensed clinical social worker. She has held numerous administrative and clinical positions within both the addictions and mental health disciplines. She is an adjunct professor at both Touro College and Hunter College Silberman Schools of Social Work. In conjunction with her numerous roles\, she also conducts and develops trainings for mental health and addictions professionals in both direct practice and leadership positions. DESCRIPTION:The veterinary tranquilizer xylazine is being associated with a rising count of overdose fatalities across the country amidst the ongoing crisis of drug addiction and overdose. Persons are often exposed to xylazine unintentionally through adulterated heroin/fentanyl products. Data on this critical public health threat are just emerging and suggest that xylazine exposure changes the experience of fentanyl and may lead to medical consequences such as skin ulcers. There exist pressing gaps in the surveillance and medical treatment of xylazine\, whichKelly E.
