SUMMARY:18th Annual Pioneers in Endocrinology Workshop: GLP-1 beyond Weight Loss
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 13\, 2026 – Douglass Student Center\, 100 George Street\, New Brunswick\, NJ 08901 \nScientific Presentations (Trayes Hall B)\n10:00 AM to 12:30 PM \nRandy J. Seeley\, PhD – Dr. Randy J. Seeley is the Henry King Ransom Endowed Professor of Surgery\, Internal Medicine\, and\nNutritional Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He also serves as the director of\nthe NIH-funded Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center (MNORC). His scientific work has focused\non the brain-gut axis and its role in the regulation of energy balance and metabolism with a focus on\nnew treatment strategies. He and his lab have worked to understand the actions of GLP-1 agonists and\nidentify the molecular underpinnings of the potent effects of bariatric surgery on weight and\nmetabolism. \nLinda Rinaman\, PhD- Dr. Linda Rinaman is a distinguished research professor in the Department of Psychology and the R.\nBruce Masterton Professor of Neuroscience at Florida State University. She is coeditor in chief of Brain\nStructure and Function. Her current research using rodents includes anatomical and functional analysis\nof glucagon-expressing cells in the brain and periphery. This research is providing novel insight into the\nGLP-1 agonist effects on binge-type eating disorders\, alcohol use disorder\, and other substance use\ndisorders. \nLuncheon: 12:30–1:30 PM (in person\, Trayes Hall A)\nPoster Presentations: 1:30–3:00 PM (in person\, Douglass Lounge) Featuring the most current endocrine research at Rutgers

SUMMARY:GSAPP Webinar - Harm Reduction Psychotherapy for Substance Use and Other Addictive Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:This training will provide a clinical roadmap of harm reduction psychotherapy as a compassionate\, non-judgmental framework for engaging and treating clients navigating active substance use and addictive behaviors. Moving beyond traditional abstinence-only models\, this approach empowers clinicians to support a range of client-directed goals\, including abstinence\, moderation\, and safer use. Discussions will also focus on how to address the co-occurring complexities accompanying substance use such as a history of trauma\, relationship issues\, and mood and anxiety disorders. Therapeutic strategies to build compassion and collaboratively establish sustainable positive changes will be reviewed. Participants will gain practical skills to foster a collaborative therapeutic alliance\, help clients cultivate mindfulness practices\, and develop self-regulation skills. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify three core principles of harm reduction psychotherapy.\nSummarize the efficacy of harm reduction strategies. \nDescribe how “urge surfing” can help with managing cravings and emotional triggers.\n\nInstructor Bio \nJenifer Levy\, PhD is a licensed psychologist with a private practice serving clients in New York\, New Jersey\, and Connecticut.  Dr. Levy specializes in the treatment of addictive issues and trauma from a harm reduction framework that is collaborative\, compassionate\, and non-judgmental. Dr. Levy obtained her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech and completed her internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Princeton House Behavioral Health. She previously worked as the Assistant Director of The Center for Optimal Living\, an outpatient private practice in NYC\, where she coordinated clinical services and training activities along with providing psychotherapy. She also taught and supervised graduate students in psychology as the Assistant Director of the Concentration in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling at The New School for Social Research. Prior to that\, she was a Supervising Psychologist at the Women’s Health Project at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. In addition to offering psychotherapy services\, Dr. Levy facilitates trainings on a range of topics related to addictive issues\, harm reduction\, mindfulness approaches\, and working with trauma survivors.

SUMMARY:2026 Twelfth Annual Rutgers Brain Health Institute Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The 12th Annual Rutgers Brain Health Institute (BHI) Symposium will be held on Wednesday\, December 2\, 2026\, at the College Avenue Student Center\, New Brunswick\, NJ. The full‑day event will feature a keynote lecture by Dr. Joseph E. LeDoux from NYU\, cutting‑edge research presentations from BHI faculty\, a special panel focused on the Rutgers Women’s Brain Health Initiative\, two‑minute trainee flash talks\, a trainee poster session\, and a Brain Art Exhibition. View the symposium agenda. Early registration closes on November 6\, 2026. \nTo register\, click here. \nKeynote Speaker: Joseph E. LeDoux\, PhD \nProfessor Emeritus\, New York University; Henry and Lucy Moses Professor\, Professor of Neural Science and Psychology\, Professor of Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry\, NYU Langone Medical School; Elected Member\, National Academy of Sciences; Elected Member\, American Academy of Arts and Sciences \n“The Troubled History of the Emotional Brain” \nEmotions are at the heart of human experience. Unfortunately\, the neuroscientific study of emotions has long been plagued by misunderstanding and arguments about what emotions are. Until we pin down what emotions are\, we won’t be able to relieve the emotional problems that plague so many people. Our understanding of emotion in the brain is only as good as our conceptualization of what an emotion is. This lecture provides an overview of my fifty-year involvement in neuroscience\, and particularly my efforts to bring emotional consciousness into the field through the study of the neural bases of fear conditioning. It is a personal\, not an encyclopedic\, overview of this topic. Other neuroscientists who worked on emotion during this time would likely tell their story differently. \nSpecial Panel: Rutgers Women’s Brain Health Initiative \nJoin the special panel highlighting the Rutgers Women’s Brain Health Initiative (RWBHI). Dr. Gary Aston‑Jones\, Director of BHI\, and Dr. Ioana Carcea\, who leads RWBHI\, will provide an introduction to the initiative. Led by moderator Dr. Gloria Vanderham\, panelists Drs. Gloria Bachman\, Alopi Patel\, Anna Konova\, and Troy Roepke will hold a collaborative dialogue on the initiative’s mission: closing knowledge gaps by supporting women’s brain health research and sharing research‑backed public information\, drawing on Rutgers’ diverse research and clinical expertise. \nTrainee Poster Session & Two-Minute Flash Talks \nPlease submit your poster title\, author names\, PI name\, and abstract (250-word limit) to bhi@bhi.rutgers.edu. Only one poster will be accepted from each lab. Due to limited space\, only the first 50 poster abstract submissions will be accepted. The top 25 posters will be selected for a two-minute podium flash talk during the symposium. Poster abstract submissions are due November 6\, 2026. \nBrain Art Exhibition \nShowcase your creativity! We invite Rutgers trainees to submit artwork related to neuroscience\, brain\, or mental health research. Whether it is a research image captured in the lab or a de novo creation inspired by neuroscience\, let your creativity shine! Up to 20 pieces will be selected for display during the symposium. Based on the number and quality of submissions\, three winners will be selected to receive prizes: 1st Place: $200; 2nd Place: $150; 3rd Place: $100. Please submit your artwork by November 6\, 2026.
