DESCRIPTION:Many new drugs are making local and national headlines such as K2/Spice and Bath Salts. This interactive webinar will discuss the latest developments and information regarding synthetic cannabinoids\, MDPV\, Mephedrone\, Kratom\, Salvia and other designer drugs that have been emerging over the past few years. Webinar participants will be introduced to the physiology of these drugs and how they can possibly impact\, mimic and exacerbate mental health disorders such as anxiety and depressive disorders. Epidemiologic trends in drug abuse in both youth and adults will be discussed as will the latest trends from the New Jersey Division of Addiction Services. Webinar participants will participate in interactive discussions and exercises in differential diagnosis of similar symptoms produced by these emerging drugs of abuse and other mental health disorders. Patterns of use\, abilities for urine detection\, and other legal aspect regarding these emerging drugs will be discussed. DESCRIPTION:Join Drs. Jennifer Johnson and Faye S. Taxman for a discussion on results from their study exploring evidence-based mental health practices for individuals involved in the justice system or at risk of becoming involved in the justice system. These practices can be used in communities or police\, court\, jail\, and community corrections settings. Their work has shown that a lack of community mental health and substance use services in communities predicts higher per capita jail populations. DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION – CLICK HERE! \nBIO: Shelly F. Greenfield\, MD\, MPH is Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the Kristine M. Trustey Endowed Chair of Psychiatry at McLean Hospital where she also serves as the Chief Academic Officer. She is the Chief of the Division of Women's Mental Health and the Director of Clinical and Health Services Research and Education in the Alcohol\, Drug and Addiction Treatment Program at McLean Hospital. She is the Mary Beth and Chris Gordon Fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute (2024-2025) where she is studying gender differences in substance use disorders. Dr. Greenfield is an addiction psychiatrist\, clinician and researcher. She has served as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on federally funded research focusing on treatment for substance use disorders\, gender differences in substance disorders\, and health services for substance disorders. She received a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded career award in substance use disorder patient oriented research (2005-2016). Funded by grants from NIH/NIDA\, she developed and tested a new manual-based group therapy for women with substance use disorders\, the Women’s Recovery Group (WRG). The WRG is an evidence-based treatment and the manual for dissemination was published in 2016\, Treating Women with Substance Use Disorders: The Women’s Recovery Group Manual. She is Past President of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and past chair of the American Psychiatric Association Council on Addiction Psychiatry. She served as Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Review of Psychiatry for 16 years (2002-2018). Dr. Greenfield was a member of the Advisory Committee on Services for Women for the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (2011-2017) and a member of the NIH/NIDA National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse (2021-2024). She has been elected to the American College of Psychiatrists and the College on Problems of Drug Dependence\, and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. She received the R. Brinkley Smithers Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Society of Addiction Medicine\, Harvard Medical School’s A. Clifford Barger Award for Excellence in Mentoring\, the Stuart A. SUMMARY:NJ ACTS Special Populations Seminar with Julie R. Gaither\, "The Impact of the Opioid Crisis on Infants\, Children\, and Adolescents
DESCRIPTION:Join the NJ ACTS Special Populations Core 2025 Seminar Series –   “The Impact of the Opioid Crisis on Infants\, Children\, and Adolescents” with Julie R. Gaither\, PhD. \nThe presentation will provide an overview of how the pediatric community has been impacted by the opioid crisis. An overview of trends in pediatric morbidity and mortality related to opioids in general and fentanyl specifically will be provided. The talk will also present recent data related to the circumstances behind fatal pediatric opioid poisonings and the risk of maltreatment among infants\, young children\, and adolescents. \nDr. Gaither is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (General Pediatrics) and Public Health (Chronic Disease Epidemiology). She obtained her doctorate in epidemiology from the Yale School of Public Health in 2015. After completing a post-doctoral fellowship in bioinformatics\, she joined the faculty of the Yale School of Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics. Her research focuses on the impact of the opioid crisis on vulnerable populations\, work she began more than a decade ago as part of her dissertation research\, for which she received a National Research Service Award from the NIH to study the association between opioid prescribing practices and all-cause mortality among U.S. veterans. In 2015\, she began working on a project that allowed her to bridge her interests in adult medicine with that of pediatrics\, which resulted in the first national publication to examine hospitalizations for opioid poisonings in children. She followed this work with the first national study to examine pediatric deaths from opioids. Prior to these publications\, most of what was known about opioid-related morbidity and mortality came from the adult overdose literature. Her research has been supported by awards from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)\, the National Center for Advancing Translational Science\, the Patterson Trust\, the Hood Foundation\, and most recently\, the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). \nRegister for the event: https://go.rutgers.edu/5almfux

DESCRIPTION:Evidence shows that among the most likely to witness an overdose are people who use drugs\, care providers\, neighbors\, and loved ones – none of which are mutually exclusive\, and all of which may include you. NJHRC will be hosting monthly virtual Overdose Education & Naloxone training to learn how to identify and respond to an opioid overdose with rescue breaths\, naloxone\, and radical love. Our program will also cover the nuances surrounding current drug supply trends\, with updated information as overdose responses evolve in correlation. DESCRIPTION:This presentation will provide practical knowledge of how to communicate a rural health evidence-base to policymakers and engage in advocacy to promote policy goals. Rural health stakeholders are uniquely positioned to advocate on behalf of policy issues such as the need for increased access to care and healthcare investments within historically disadvantaged communities. While individuals often have a desire to engage in the advocacy or policymaking process\, they operate without a clear understanding of how to do so. This presentation will outline different roles in advocacy campaigns\, as well as functions of and actors within the advocacy ecosystem. SUMMARY:GSAPP Webinar - Resurgence of Cocaine Use in Employed Adults: The Role of Office-Based Psychotherapists in Early Intervention and Treatment
DESCRIPTION:Cocaine use in the U.S. is rising again\, accompanied by a troubling increase in overdose deaths due to fentanyl-laced cocaine. Fentanyl\, a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin\, significantly heightens the risks associated with cocaine use. Recent surveys show a resurgence in cocaine use\, particularly among employed men aged 25 to 45. Mental health clinicians in office-based practice are often the first point of contact for functional adults grappling with cocaine and other substance use issues. As such\, it is crucial for therapists—regardless of their specialty or professional background—to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to identify\, assess\, and treat substance use disorders\, and/or to refer patients for specialized care when necessary. Early intervention by clinicians can greatly improve treatment outcomes\, mitigating both personal and professional consequences of untreated substance use. In the case of cocaine\, timely action can also prevent fentanyl-related overdose deaths. This webinar is designed to enhance participants’ understanding of the distinct features of cocaine and opioids\, as well as the clinical considerations that set them apart from other psychoactive substances. It will introduce a set of therapeutic interventions for assessing\, motivating\, and treating clients with substance use problems in an office-based psychotherapy setting. The approach described is rooted in a client-centered\, individualized framework that supports both harm reduction and abstinence goals to optimize treatment engagement\, retention\, and clinical outcomes.
