SUMMARY:Cyberbotany and the Quest for Epistemic Justice in Psychedelic Research Webinar featuring Dr. Joanna Kempner
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Borghesi-Mellon Psychedelic Pasts\, Presents & Futures Workshop Group for a presentation with Dr. Joanna Kempner.\n\n\n\nThe reemergence of psychedelic research in universities comes with a robust historical narrative that blames politicians for the rise and fall of scientific interest in these substances. While it’s true that public policies made it more difficult to study psychedelics in institutionalized settings\, prohibition only pushed experimentation with psychedelics underground and out of sight. Nevertheless\, knowledge produced underground has been foundational in contemporary psychedelic science\, vis a vis a practice that I call “cyberbotany.”\n\nCyberbotany\, or the digital ethnobotanical study\, leverages the wealth of experiential data available within online communities to understand the use of psychedelic substances. This approach circumvents the legal and logistical barriers to traditional research by tapping into the vast\, yet often overlooked\, reservoir of knowledge generated in digital spaces.\n\n\n\nIt’s not always clear\, however\, that the use of cyberbotany translates into recognition of the value that diverse knowledge systems have brought into the field. I argue that cyberbotany underscores the importance of epistemic justice in the domain of psychedelic studies. By valuing the knowledge created in non-traditional settings\, this approach contributes to a more equitable and comprehensive understanding of psychedelics’ role in medicine and society.\n\n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting (Zoom).\n\n\n\n\nJoanna Kempner\, associate professor in theDepartment of Sociologyat Rutgers University\, is an award-winning sociologist of science\, medicine\, technology\, and inequality\, and the author ofPsychedelic Outlaws: The Movement Revolutionizing Modern Medicine(Hachette\, 2024) andNot Tonight: Migraine and the Politics of Gender and Health (Chicago\, 2014).\n\nKempner’s research has been published in top journals across multiple disciplines\, including Science\, PLoS Medicine\, and Social Science & Medicine and featured in the Washington Post\, the New York Times\, PBS Newshour\, and the BBC. You can see her entire family talk about migraine in the documentary Out of My Head.

SUMMARY:Addiction Policy Forum Webinar: How to Build Opioid Data Dashboards for Community Decision-Making
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nData dashboards are powerful tools that can support community engagement and decision-making by providing public health surveillance\, early detection of emerging health threats\, and efficient resource allocation. These dashboards serve as a transparent and customizable platform for communicating critical information in easy-to-understand\, interactive formats (e.g.\, charts\, graphs\, maps) to policymakers\, stakeholders\, community members\, and the public. Many states and jurisdictions across the country have utilized data dashboards to identify trends\, evaluate the effectiveness of existing policies\, and develop targeted interventions to quell the ongoing substance use disorder and overdose crisis. As part of the HEALing Communities Study (HCS)\, a multi-site research study that tested the impact of an integrated set of evidence-based practices to reduce fatal opioid-related overdose\, researchers from four participating research sites (New York\, Massachusetts\, Kentucky\, and Ohio) developed unique dashboards to support data-driven decision-making. \nJoin us for a webinar to learn how data dashboards can facilitate evidence-based decision-making by providing insights into effective approaches\, gaps in substance use disorder services\, and opportunities to address challenges within communities. Presenters will provide a step-by-step walkthrough of the undertakings to develop the HCS dashboards\, including the process of accessing\, displaying\, and explaining data; co-designing dashboards with state and local partners; implementing and using dashboards in the community; and best practices for using and sustaining them. They will also share publicly available tools that communities can use to develop their own dashboards\, as well as a set of standardized measures used by HCS for data collection.

SUMMARY:GSAPP Webinar - Opioid Addiction and Its Treatment: What Every Psychotherapist Needs to Know
DESCRIPTION:Description \nAn unremitting epidemic of opioid use and overdose deaths highlights the need for all mental health therapists\, regardless of professional discipline or specialty area\, to know how to evaluate\, diagnose\, engage\, treat\, and/or refer opioid-using clients they are likely to encounter in office-based practice and other clinical settings. Although medication is often the first-line treatment for opioid dependence\, the combination of targeted pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy is often more effective than either one alone. This presentation will describe the scope and consequences of opioid use; the clinical pharmacology of opioid drugs\, clinical assessment and diagnosis\, individualized treatment planning\, medications for treating opioid use disorders (including buprenorphine and naltrexone)\, and a client-centered psychotherapeutic approach that integrates evidence-based behavioral and pharmacological interventions within a harm reduction framework. Lecture material will be interspersed with case vignettes to illustrate the clinical application of this approach. \nLearning Objectives \nAs a result of attending this presentation\, participants will be able to: \n\nSummarize the scope and public health consequences of opioid use in the U.S.\nExplain the unique pharmacological actions of opioids in the body and brain.\nDescribe the most effective medications for treating opioid dependence and specific indications for their use.\nSummarize the components of an individualized client-centered approach that integrates pharmacological and behavioral interventions.\n\nInstructor Bio \nDr. Washton is a psychologist\, book author\, and founder of The Washton Group\, a private practice specializing on the treatment of substance use disorders in executives\, professionals\, adolescents\, and young adults. He has served as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine\, director of several nationally recognized addiction treatment programs\, principal investigator of research grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse\, and consultant to professional sports teams\, government agencies\, media organizations\, and major corporations. He has also served as substance abuse advisor to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration\, special committees of The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives\, and the American Psychological Association. Dr. Washton has authored over 100 journal articles and nine books including “Treating Alcohol and Drug Problems in Psychotherapy Practice: Doing What Works” (2nd Edition\, 2022). \nFor more information and registration\, click here.
