SUMMARY:Socratic Scrub Grand Rounds featuring Dr. Jennifer G. Mulle - "How do you study a complex phenotype like schizophrenia? A rare variant perspective"
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Rutgers Acute Care Surgery Research (RASR) Lab\, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School\, the Rutgers School of Graduate Studies\, and the Rutgers Office of Postdoctoral Affairs\, we are pleased to invite you to the next Socratic Scrub Grand Rounds\, featuring Dr. Jennifer G. Mulle\, Ph.D.\, of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. \nDate: Friday\, October 30\, 2026 \nTime: 10:00–11:00 AM \nRegistration: https://rutgers.zoom.us/meeting/register/RqqTQvm-StWWMeCstAkLjw \n\nTitle: How do you study a complex phenotype like schizophrenia?  A rare variant perspective. \nSocratic Scrub Grand Rounds is a series devoted to research judgment: the reasoning behind discovery rather than its finished results. Drawing on François Jacob’s distinction between “day science” and “night science\,” we invite distinguished investigators to share not only what they found\, but how they navigated the uncertainty\, false starts\, and difficult decisions along the way. The series is open broadly to Rutgers faculty and trainees\, and we would be honored to have your participation. \nDr. Jennifer Mulle\, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine at Rutgers University\, is passionate about the potential for rare variants to enhance our understanding of common complex psychiatric phenotypes.  After earning her PhD in Human Genetics at Johns Hopkins\, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University where she discovered that deletion at chromosome 3q29 confers an estimated 40-fold increased risk for schizophrenia.  Dr. Mulle uses the 3q29 deletion as a model to identify the molecular and cellular underpinnings of schizophrenia\, autism\, and associated neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders.
